… More »Jamal Malik is an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" When the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up. He describes their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Every chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible questions. When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers watch to find out if he can answer the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

Add a CommentThis is the movie led me to be away from Oscars. Computer-generated no-melody music/songs, insulting Indian slum (there are worst in NY, Chicago and Baltimore downtowns, and more in London). When western countries US and UK can not escape from slum communities what a development country like India to show big. So pathetic and some are not real. Time waste movie
I really enjoyed this movie, set in Mumbai, India. Brothers Jamal and Salim are orphaned as young boys. They live by their wits in the slums. One day they are picked up and taken to an orphanage with the motive of using the children for begging. The brothers eventually escape. As they grow older, Salim gets involved in a gang, and Jamal pines after a young girl friend that they left behind at the orphanage. Later Jamal gets a spot on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and is tortured by police who think he is cheating. It turns out that random events in his life have led him to answer the various questions. This was a good movie to watch after reading the book "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" for insight into the difficulties of life for India's poor.
Danny Boyle hits one out of the park !
Sweet story of love and devotion. Disturbing scenes of (what I'm assuming are) some harsh realities in India. The combination of the aforementioned, plus a once in a lifetime chance at a million bucks, made this movie, for me, pretty much real life in the cruel world... good and bad... and worth the watch.
I enjoyed this movie of life through the eyes of three orphans first as young children and then as young adults. A unique story line. I was engaged, enraged, and overjoyed throughout the movie. I also enjoyed the typical Indian Bollywood ending which made me want to learn to dance this way. This ending may have seemed out of synch with the story context, but it was in synch with Indian film making.
great movie, each question answered from a tragic life experience, cruel world out there, the happy dancing scene at the end is so incompatible with the movie because the movie reveal a sad and sorry society. The protagonist rose from an extremely challenging environment, not tainted by it as his brother was, could still pursue his dream, his dream girl.
I have seen every movie nominated for best picture ( not just the winners) since the beginning of the Oscars. This deserved to win that year. it was a very good movie and none of the other nominees deserved it. I was driven to watch all these movies by watching some movies that won or didn't win and wondered why? I still don't know why Marty (1955) and Tom Jones (1963) won. I still can't believe that Citizen Kane did not. the acting categories have mysteries as well starting with Clark Gable not winning for Gone with the wind. or Julie Andrews not winning for the Sound of Music.
Normally I appreciate realism in film even if it's violence etc but you have to wonder when it's about reality and when it's sensationalism. The film begins with a torture scene and goes downhill from there. I fast-forwarded through, hoping for some normal scenes but just kept running into more violence or disgusting imagery. I'm assuming this is R-rated? Not for family viewing.
wow wow wow wow never seen movie like this so good
After all the hype, thought this would be a good movie, but...I was very disappointed. The plot was thin, it was exaggerated in a way that was very unbelievable. I've also seen several other movies about the slums of India that were excellent, much better than this one. The acting was OK, but having seen most of the past Academy winners, this one just does not measure up!
