A 2011 Newbery Honor Book Come feel the cool and shadowed breeze, come smell your way among the trees, come touch rough bark and leathered leaves: Welcome to the night. Welcome to the night, where mice stir and furry moths flutter. Where snails spiral into shells as orb spiders circle in silk. Where the roots of oak trees recover and repair from their time in the light. Where the porcupette eats delicacies--raspberry leaves!--and coos and sings. Come out to the cool, night wood, and buzz and hoot and howl--but do beware of the great horned owl-- for it's wild and it's windy way out in the woods! This Newbery Honor-winning picture book combines beautifully written poetry with facts of the forest and elaborate illustrations to form a marvelously engaging collection.

I recommend this book because it portrays the animal life that comes to life at night and how all living things have a place with a purpose. I love the illustrations in this book because shows a world beyond our imagination merging the poems with each of the illustration. The animals are giving a unique personality by the author and that brings the ecosystem of this fauna to be appreciated in great detail. The poems are wonderful and encourage the reader to submerge in this dark, mysterious life.

“Dark Emperor & Other Poems of the Night” is a children’s poetry book. This picture book is full of beautiful pictures filled with even lovelier poems. These poems are about different animals and nature. On the other side of the poems there is a section that explains the nature of the poem that was presented beforehand. It give you different background information and I feel it helps you better understand the poem. When I become a teacher I look forward to introducing poetry to my students and making it realistic like this book. I recommend this book for teachers and parents to read to their children. This will help kids learn to appreciate poetry at an earlier age.

I recommend this book for reading because it gives factual information on the animal being observed. The illustrations are very detailed and interesting. They caught my eye more than the text did. When I first read the title it took me for a loop because it made it seem like a heroic type of book or something with some adventure in it. If you are an animal lover then this book will defiently be one that attracts you because it is about nature during the night. The setting of the book is in a forest and character development is significance to the role they play in the night life and how they survive. The story is told in third person.
